Optum/UnitedHealth Group is committed to supporting the development of the Cell and Gene Therapy marketplace.  These therapies are characterized by the manipulation of cells to treat disease.  Many of these therapies target patients with rare diseases and have the potential to cure and/ or significantly improve patient quality of life.  By 2026, we estimate that there will be >190 therapies on market in the U.S., representing >$30B in drug spend, $12-15B in supporting care costs and billions more in indirect care costs associated with patient diagnosis and ongoing treatment. The scientific and clinical complexity, as well as unprecedented prices associated with gene therapies, are just a few of the challenges. To fully realize the promising clinical benefits, these therapies will require a transformed approach to care; patients, pharma manufacturers, care providers, health plans, and plan sponsors are going to be critical stakeholders in deploying these therapies to their fullest potential.This leader will be establishing a dynamic organization in an emerging market that is fast-paced and driven by UnitedHealth Groups vision to promote healthcare access and affordability nationwide.  They will be responsible for starting Optums Gene Therapy business, with a significant focus on setting the strategic vision, defining the core business offering and recruiting a team to execute on it.  The leader will steer a team to drive the organization development forward and work with Optum/ UHG leadership to build the business.  This leader must be a gritty, seasoned executive with skills in setting the strategic vision, securing funding, building a startup from concept to profit realization, and full P&L management of a high-growth business in an emerging market.  This leader should have: Knowledge of the rare/ genetic disease marketplace and therapy landscape, Understanding of the drug supply chain and payment models (particularly for gene therapies or specialized pharmaceuticals)  Experience with pharma therapy development approaches (e.g., discovery, launch, supply chain, outcomes tracking, etc.)  A proven ability to navigate a complex organization and manage multiple stakeholdersThis leader can bring an extensive network of relationships with market constituents and industry influencers to help accelerate in-market efforts.This position is responsible for setting and executing the strategy, providing thought leadership to the long term shape the market overall and Optums efforts in this space, acting as the face of Optums Gene Therapy efforts to the external stakeholders, establishing priorities, building alignment and providing direction to cross-functional teams.  This leader is also responsible for selecting, managing and creating a robust bench of talent, particularly with experience in working with life sciences companies, provider organizations, and payers.  This person will be accountable for achieving goals for business plan milestones, financial performance objectives and market shaping influence on the development of the Gene Therapy space system wide.Roles & Responsibilities: Establish the Cell & Gene Therapy business plan Validate market opportunity and strategy as currently envisioned Create a roadmap for the business Set and advance partnership and M&A agendas to enable rapid growth (incl. negotiating and leveraging complex partnerships) Establish a financial case for the investment Define a competitive, differentiated operating model and operations blueprint Socialize the opportunity, enroll internal executive leadership and external validation, and gain buy-in/ secure funding Meet 2021 commitments to operationalize the business plan: Hire the management team Hit targets for adoption of Gene Therapy Risk Protection product Secure first five customers  Drive development, validation, and build of MVP of pharma manufacturer focused solutions. Drive development, validation and build of benefit sponsor focused solutions. Develop an operating cadence and performance management plan with clear and measurable metrics Ongoing responsibilities include: Foster a culture of empathy, patient-centricity and service excellence Build relationships with thought leaders, influencers in this market “ e.g., clinicians, health systems, pharma manufacturers, consultants, technology companies, venture capital organizations, etc. Contribute to forward strategy and planning for the business Create measurement models to evaluate pilots and proof of concepts Manage ongoing performance against established goals and success measures Drive a culture of quality and high Net Promoter Scores Collaborate with leaders of Optum Frontier Therapies to build a cohesive go-to-market approaches Work with the clinical organization and independent Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee to ensure consistency with clinical policy Key accountabilities include: Consolidation of existing Optum/ UHC capabilities in Gene Therapy into one cohesive business model and strategy. Achievement of adoption targets of recently launched Gene Therapy products Overall earnings performance and growth Capital efficiency and ROIC Net Promoter Score results Establishment and scaling of base operations Management of workforce quality, experience and utilization Continued evolution of operational practices and processes in order to rapidly scale the business High employee engagement, retention and satisfaction Youll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.Youll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.Requirements: Bachelors degree 10+ years of experience managing/leading teams 15+ years working in General Management, Operation roles Understand the drug supply chain and payment models (ideally for gene therapies or specialized pharmaceuticals)  Experience commercializing products or services  Experienced hands on leadership Proven ability to build relationships cross-functionally and lead toward common goals  Strong communicator; capable of effectively presenting ideas and selling concepts and tactics; excellent writer, proven ability to communicate effectively with executive-levels; ability to quickly understand needs and act on those needs; ability to conceptualize and effectuate change management and ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking Solid organizational, management, administrative and human relations skills, and a style which exhibits emotional maturity, leadership, collaboration and teamwork  Experience and comfort with ambiguity; navigating to solutions balancing long term success with short-term wins. Experience managing a P&L Experience building high performance teams Design, build, and implement business operations  Proven strategy experience Ability and willingness to travel up to 50%, average 1-2 days a week nationally If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. In addition, employees must comply with any state and local masking ordersPreferred Qualifications: Experience in a C-level role/position Knowledge of the rare/ genetic disease marketplace and therapy landscape highly desired Experience with pharma therapy development approaches (e.g., discovery, launch, supply chain, outcomes tracking, etc.)  Healthcare start-up/incubator experience Experience in provider settings and direct patient care  Experience with emerging biotechnology and life sciences, preferably in rare diseases Knowledge of managed care and/or benefit design (including medical stop-loss, utilization management, center of excellence networks, transplant, etc.) UnitedHealth Group experience MBA, MHA, or equivalent Careers with Optum. The role is also eligible to participate in UHGs annual bonus and long term incentive plans.
